Hi Wes,

There could be a couple of reasons:

* You are not zoomed in far enough in Mapsource. If you have not changed the default settings in Mapsource and the detail level is still set to "Medium", the trails will not display until you zoom in to or past the 0.5 mile level. Higher or lower details levels will change the level at which the trails appear.
* You are viewing an area that has no trails. Confirm that you are looking at a spot that should have some (check the coverage map at http://www.switchbacks.com/maps/NW_Trails.html).

Let me know if neither of these corrects the issue you are seeing.

Thanks!

Awsome Jon. Thanks for the help. You've got a great site here. I got some great info about the PN-40, and got some more from Corey_Njoey as well. Maybe the PN-40 deserves another look. Not sure if I want that or to fork over the $$$ for an Oregon. But thanks for this help and prompting the PN-40 research.

Whenever you upload maps to a Garmin unit, the process overwrites the previous mapset. Usually this uploaded mapset has the name "gmapsupp.img". The built-in mapsets on the units generally have the name of "gmapprom.img". This keeps uploaded maps from interfering with the built-in maps.

To update Northwest Trails, simply install the latest version to Mapsource and upload it with the other maps you want on your unit that are not already part of the built-in maps.

Let me know if you have additional questions or run into problems.

First, thans for all the hard work to the multitude of people who work on this. J0hnnycache pointed me in the right direction and I have the first and version from December 2008 on my GPS. Invaluable for geocaching, if my G530 could hold a sat under tree cover.

A question if someone can help me out. How would I get the previous version of NWT off of my Garmin 530 and upload the new? Anyone, anyone? Bueller, Bueller? Thanks,
Mike, aka combatnurse2003

I just received by Earthmate PN-40 in the mail yesterday. All I want to do is load my geocaches and maps. I couldn't figure out how to load maps through Topo USA 7.0 so went directly from the PN-40 detailed maps DVD. The maps were larger than I expected. I am still trying to figure out how to get my 10,000 geocaching points of interest loaded into the PN-40. Going through the geocaching.com website and adding the geocaches one by one through the browser plugin is a big pain and takes way to long to even load 20 geocaches. Who really wants to spend the time and researching each geocache before the hunt. It is better to just grab the whole list and go. I tried loading in all of my points of interest though Topo Map, but it kept giving the 'program is not responding' message. I was using the same POI file that I use for my Garmin 60CSx and with the Garmin have to trick to get all the data to fit within the number of character constraints. If you have a Garmin, you know what I mean.

I installed the new firmware update today to see if that would help. The new geocaching screen is great. I love having the complete description of the geocache all within one screen. On the Garmin 60CSx, I had to split the description and logs into multiple screen points of interest.

I have read about Cache Register. It sounds like a cool tool. Can I load my 10,000 geocaches all at once using the Cache Register? Is there a limit in the Earthmate PN-40 of how many geocaches I can load? I heard it had a limit of 1000 waypoints. Are geocaches considered waypoints? Can I load my pocket query files directly to the GPS unit? Can I create PN-40 geocache files using GSAK? I have only had the Earthmate PN-40 for a day and am still learning how to use it for geocaching.

Unless somebody gives me 5 good reasons why the Earthmate PN-40 is better than the Garmin 60CSx, I will be sticking with my garmin 60CSx. Functionality, compatibility, and tools that I get with the Garmin 60CSx far outway the speed and map quality of the Earthmate PN-40.

I want you to know that I think this review is the most helpful I have seen. Gee! I really like the feel and screen, the functionality of this PN-40, but it is a real struggle to get it set up and filter through the complexity of the software. Well written.

Also, my regards to Chip Noble. I hope DeLorme proves to be this responsive. They really have a winner in the making.

In reading reviews like yours, I'm struck with how little I know about the sport and technology. I'm also unsure how many of the issues you ran into apply to my situation. Apologies in advance for this being long. I've tried to edit it down.

I currently have a Vista HCx and am to receive a PN-40 for Christmas. My primary interests in upgrading to the PN-40:

1) Mapping data updates. Fessing up to my neocaching nature: As far as I can determine, Garmin does not update their maps very often. Their map packages are $100 each, equivalent to three years of the Delorme subscription. That Delorme was offering a very reasonably priced subscription is very compelling. I like Delorme's offering subsections for when I travel to new areas.

2) Supplement the mapping capability of the HCx. I have roads and Dairy Queens and Courthouses and stuff, but what I *really* want are bike trails and help with finding ways to get to a geocache. Delorme's overhead views seemed like they would be helpful to determining an approach to a cache.

It was serendipitous that I stumbled upon your excellent trails maps a few days ago. (Issue solved a completely different way.)

3) Better handling of the different types of geocaches. I've made the classic neocacher mistake of seeing a nearby cache, then not finding it because it was, in fact, a mystery cache "not at the posted coordinates" or, a multi whose description is key to computing the other waypoints. Now I filter these out with GSAK.

As a visual cue, I've done some cache type remapping in GSAK, but found I couldn't always remember that "a blue flag" meant microcache. Allanon pointed me to the use of customized icons. These are now happily mapped to the ones on geocaching.com.

(Issue sorta solved.. I need to tweak the colors for better contrast. I would *love* to go to paperless caching, especially in the Pacific Northwe't.)

4) Improved user interface. I find I have to do a *lot* of clicking on the HCx to get to functions. The PN40 has a "find" button. :)

5) Competition. I'd like to see Delorme succeed in generating competition to Garmin (just because some competition is good).

--
In your first posting about the map transfer times ("Of course, it took a while..."), I wonder if there's something *I'm* doing wrong with my use of Garmin MapSource. Loading the northwest Metroguide maps, topos and your trail/building maps onto my Garmin HCx takes at least 90 minutes (despite Mapsource's user interface dissonance that there are "5 minutes remaining") for whatever processing Mapsource does to package it. (If I were to load, say, Texas from the DVDs, that part of the process would take *hours*. I usually start it before going to bed.) Once packaged, transferring takes at least 20+ minutes as it has to upload everything again. It sounds like your experience with the Colorado has been completely different?

(The loooooong transfer times with the Garmin have been tolerated only because I don't frequently travel beyond the tri-state area. If I did, wiping the maps out each time - which I agree is a lame implementation - would force me to seek alternate solutions. (Maybe another $15 mSD card?))

Something I missed when I gave the heavy gift hints leading to the purchase was that the PN40's geocaching mode is a *planned* firmware upgrade. I haven't seen an estimated ship date. As I write this, there is a December 17 firmware update (v2.4) posted, but no mention of geocaching features. (They do mention improvements in connection.) The not-so-early-adopter in me wants to wait until other, more experienced people have put it through the wringers.

So right now, I have an unopened PN40 sitting under the tree. I'm not sure if I should return it and wait until it's matured.
